Day Waterman College is a modern co-educational boarding school designed to provide an exciting learning environment for children between the ages of 11 - 16. We provide a broad-based education of international standard to meet global needs. The College is set on 35 hectares of natural landscape in Asu, near Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria. Facilities and equipment of outstanding quality have been provided to support the learning environment, including access to safe recreational areas.

This College is built to educate young people to become leaders who will be at the forefront of the rapid economic and social development sweeping through Nigeria. The demands of living and working in a global economic community necessitates adaptable and flexible young people with the skill-set, knowledge and character to contribute and shape the future, and meet the many challenges that lie ahead.

Applications are hereby requested from qualified professionals to fill the underlisted position:

Job Title: Matron

Location:
Ogun
Responsible to: Co-Principal (Pastoral)
Responsible for: The pastoral/medical welfare of students in the boarding house

Job Description
The Matron will be required:
  • To act as loco parentis and to be responsible for the physical, health, social and emotional wellbeing of all the students in the boarding house.
  • To care for the students in the House, with particular responsibility for the clothing, health (in conjunction with the Medical Centre) and general well-being of those in the House.
  • To supervise the domestic staff attached to the House in ensuring that their work is carried out effectively and efficiently.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities

Health and Medical:
  • To direct (and accompany where necessary) students who are unwell to the Medical Centre.
  • To attend to any students who may be unwell but not in the Medical Centre (liaising with Medical Centre staff).
  • To organize health talks for students in the House.
  • To ensure that House student records in the Boarding House are kept up-to-date.
  • To administer, in certain cases, non-prescription medication in accordance with the school's Medical Care Policy.
  • To accompany, where necessary, students to doctors’ appointments.
  • To be on supervisory duty in the Medical Centre working alongside the Medical Team in the Medical Centre.
  • To respond to medical emergencies in the house as well as routine appointments, escorting students as needed to the hospital.
Students and their parents:
  • With the Progress Tutor, to be responsible for the care, supervision, cleanliness and presentation of the students in the House.
  • To be aware of the school uniform and clothing requirements of students, and to ensure that they have all the items they require; to be responsible for the good standard of clothing of pupils, arranging for clothing to be sent to and returned from the laundry; arranging for appropriate repair of clothing; overseeing the students’ Saturday laundry.
  • To liaise with parents of students as necessary concerning domestic, welfare and medical matters in consultation with Co-Principal (Pastoral) and carrying the Progress Tutor along.
  • To liaise with parents of boarders as necessary concerning domestic matters.
  • To contribute to the induction arrangements for new students joining the House; to ensure that any "settling in" problems are resolved.
  • To provide a sympathetic presence in the house, and to be sensitive to those who are having difficulties coping with school life; to liaise closely with other relevant staff concerning the progress and welfare of pupils, most notably the Co-Principal (Pastoral).
Domestic:
  • After the end of term, to supervise the clearing up and cleaning of the House; carry out a check of all bedding, furniture, fixtures and fittings, helping to prepare for the Co-Principal (Pastoral) a list of repairs and maintenance items required for submission to the Facility Managers.
  • At the end of the holidays to supervise the preparation of bedrooms and carry out a check on furnishings to ensure that all are in good order, repairs carried out, and that rooms are clean and presentable.
  • To participate in the instruction and induction of domestic staff allocated to work in the house, to advise the Co-Principal (Pastoral) on domestic requirements.
  • To work with the Administrative Department to ensure that there are adequate supplies of cleaning materials and equipment and other domestic materials and to report any shortfalls to the Co-Principal (Pastoral).
General:
  • To take part in such performance management or staff review arrangements made by the school, on not more than an annual basis.
  • To attend boarding staff meetings as required by the Co-Principal (Pastoral).
  • To be familiar with the school's code for health and safety, and its policies and procedures for countering bullying, substance misuse and child protection.
  • To participate in prep supervision and monitoring of students in the house and the in the classroom.
  • To provide for the Co-Principal (Pastoral) a fortnightly House Report regarding the welfare of the students in the house.
  • To counsel students, at a time and place which is conducive to a good communication concerning any emotional, academic, social or behavioural problems, and to inform Co-Principal (Pastoral) if additional counselling is required, to fulfil the requirements of the School's policy and Child Protection.
  • To perform any other key tasks which the Co-Principal (Pastoral) may reasonably assign.
